In Search of Maksimilijan Vrhovac’s Will

Dr Stipe Ledić in the Archdiocesan Archives in Zagreb.
Assist. Prof. Stipe Ledić from the Catholic University of Croatia was tasked with researching the Enlightenment legacy of Maksimilijan Vrhovac (1752–1827).

One of the first things Stipe began investigating was the bishop’s previously unknown last will. This required examining the family archive of the Jelačić family in the Croatian State Archives in Zagreb (since the bishop’s niece, Franciska Sermage, was a member of that family), as well as various collections in the Archdiocesan Archives in Zagreb, which contained testamentary and estate documents of canons.

After a long search, the large-format bound will—consisting of 129 pages—was discovered with the help of Dr Stjepan Razum, head of Archdiocese Department! Stipe also found the instructions for executing the will, so the search was completely successful.

Next steps include transcribing and analyzing the Latin text, which promises to reveal many interesting details about the private and public life of one of the most prominent Zagreb bishops!
