Research Visit to Split: Exploring the Legacy of Julije Bajamonti

Assoc. Prof. Dr Katja Radoš-Perković spent several days in Split researching primary materials held across various institutions. Her work focused on examining the legacy of Julije Bajamonti, the major part of which is preserved in the library of the Archaeological Museum in Split. Bajamonti’s collection was first described and classified at the beginning of the 20th century by Ivan Milčetić, and later, towards the end of the century, Arsen Duplančić—long-time head of the museum library—undertook a detailed review of Milčetić’s records. Building on previous research, he made corrections, presented the actual state of the collection, and reorganised the material.

During her stay in Split, Dr Radoš-Perković had the valuable opportunity to consult with two of Croatia’s leading experts on Bajamonti: the aforementioned Arsen Duplančić and Prof. Ivana Tomić Ferić, author of the most recent edition of Bajamonti’s correspondence (2024). In addition to thoroughly examining Bajamonti’s manuscripts in the Archaeological Museum Library, Dr Radoš-Perković also studied a smaller number of Bajamonti’s works preserved in the University Library in Split, thanks to the kind assistance of Mihaela Kovačić, Head of Special Collections.
