Research Visit to Dubrovnik: Preparing the Correspondence of Miho Sorgo

From March 1 to 15, principal investigator Dr. Teodora Shek Brnardić and research assistant Marta Jurković stayed in Dubrovnik, where they collated transcriptions of letters written by the Dubrovnik nobleman and Enlightenment figure Miho Sorgo (1739–1796) in the collections of the State Archives in Dubrovnik.

The Croatian Institute of History had previously signed an Agreement on Scientific and Research Cooperation with the State Archives in Dubrovnik, as well as a special co-publishing contract under which the publication of Sorgo’s correspondence is being prepared. Archivist Ivona Fabris is a collaborator on the project.

The working title of the edition is Dubrovnik Nobility and Enlightenment Europe: From the Correspondence of Miho Sorgo (1739–1796). The collection, consisting of around 300 original letters from multiple archives and libraries—mostly in Italian—is expected to be published in late 2026 or early 2027.

On this occasion, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Director Nikolina Pozniak for her hospitality and for ensuring suitable working conditions in the reading room, to archivist Paula Zglav for reading faded letters using an infrared reader, as well as to all other archivists who continuously assisted us.
