Archival Research in Split

In late March 2026, research assistant Matea Marušić continued her work at the Archdiocesan Archive in Split. She conducted a detailed examination of the records of the Makarska Diocese held within the Archive. As the materials are not systematically arranged or catalogued in a manner that allows for immediate identification, the process of reading and analysis proved somewhat time-consuming.

The majority of the documents consist of correspondence from parish priests within the Makarska Diocese, primarily requesting permission to administer sacraments such as marriage or confession, or reporting on specific events, personal circumstances, or matters such as the collection of alms. A number of archival fonds remain to be examined on a folio-by-folio basis.

With regard to the Archaeological Museum, it houses correspondence of the distinguished Dubrovnik nobleman and Enlightenment figure Miho Sorgo (1739–1796). It was therefore necessary to photograph original manuscripts intended for inclusion in a corpus of 300 annotated primary-source letters. This corpus is currently being prepared for publication by the Croatian Institute of History (project LIGHT, led by Dr Teodora Shek Brnardić, with research assistant Marta Jurković), in collaboration with the State Archives in Dubrovnik.
